Escaping The Fog

In an attempt to escape The Fog we decided that today we would drive to Tofino. We set off in damp, chilly conditions with the mist swirling around us as we drove along the coast road.

Our first stop was at an area of old growth temperate rainforest. This area has some of the most pristine rainforest in the world, with trees up to 800 years old. It had an atmospheric beauty all of its own.

We arrived in Tofino late morning, to find that finally the fog was lifting and there were heavenly glimpses of sunshine! Tofimo is the larger and more commercialised big sister of Ucluelet, but we enjoyed wandering around the harbour, watching the seaplane taking off, and generally taking in the atmosphere.

Our picnic lunch today was eaten on Tonquin Beach. Very pretty and hardly anyone in sight!

Next we drove to Schooner Cove. Here a series of boardwalks run through another area of forest, winding through the huge trees for around a kilometre down to one end of Long Beach. This was a really pretty walk, with the sunshine slanting down through the branches and picking out all the hundreds of different shades of green.

Finally, we paddled in the shallows for an hour or so along Long Beach.....just beautiful.

We arrived back in Ucluelet to get fish and chips, and ate them in the last of the sunshine before The Fog rolled back in again.
