A bear behind..?

Today was a very exciting one! We were up early and arrived in plenty of time at Jamie's Whaling Station to climb into our Zodiac suits. These serve a dual purpose.....as well as keeping you warm and dry on the boat, they will also keep you afloat should you happen to end up in the water!

We climbed into the Zodiac and were soon heading out of the harbour and into open water. Lou would have loved it as it was pretty bouncy once we left the shelter of the bay!
On the way round to Barclay Sound we saw a couple of local inhabitants.

The Bald Eagle is fairly common on Vancouver Island.

We raced up Barclay Sound, and then soon began to spot bears foraging along the shoreline in some of the more remote areas. We saw quite a few, but the best encounter was with a large male who we got pretty close to as he climbed from rock to rock. Utterly magical.

We were out for around three hours and loved every minute of it. It was a fast, exciting ride, the scenery was beautiful, and the bears were an absolute highlight of the holiday for me. Yay!

  1. Yay! Rachel I can imagine that you where more excited than a “Yay” at seeing the bears. What a great time you have both had on the west coast. Jon’s highlight with the whales and yours with the bears. No fog today? I have just read that the locals on the west coast call August Fogust!!! Very appropriate from the sound of things. Looking forward to seeing what you can amaze us with in Victoria. Love the suits.

  2. It started off quite clear....but the fog soon appeared! Yes that is what they call it, its just as bad this morning ( Sunday) It's 7am and I'm listening to the waves on the shore and the foghorn echoing around the bay. We've had a wonderful time on the west coast but I'm hoping for sunshine in Victoria!

  3. In that red suit Jon is starting to look a lot like John Noakes, don't you think? And what's with those knee straps, do they think it's going to get very rough?

    1. I missed that comment initially Mr G. As long as I resemble John Noakes and not Valerie Singleton, I'll settle for that. BTW, did I ever tell you that at one time I was the proud owner of 3 Blue Peter badges?!
